Representative Malinowski Concludes 2019-2020 Youth Advisory Council

Statement

Date: July 20, 2020
Location: Somerville, NJ
Issues: K-12 Education

This weekend Representative Malinowski wrapped up the second class of his Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The YAC offers high school students from across New Jersey's 7th Congressional District the opportunity to learn about the legislative process and advise their Representative on the issues and policies that directly impact their lives. The 2019-2020 class included 165 students, grades 9-12, who were organized into 13 committees tasked with drafting legislative recommendations throughout the school year that were presented to Rep. Malinowski this month. While normally conducted in person, the YAC has continued their sessions with the Congressman virtually since March.

"The participants of this year's Youth Advisory Council have impressed and inspired me at every turn," said Representative Malinowski. "Throughout the many crises our country has faced in recent months, these young people have stepped up to lead. I am confident the future of our Nation is in good hands with these students at the helm."

Since last Fall YAC members have participated in legislative trainings conducted by the Congressman's staff, and regularly met with Rep. Malinowski to provide their perspective on the critical issues facing our district and nation. This weekend each student committee presented their final legislative recommendation; ranging from the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's "Rural Internet Infrastructure Act" which would expand broadband access to rural and low-income communities, to the Education and Labor Committee's "Civics Education Act" which would implement a mandatory civics course for all high school students.

Applications for the 2020-2021 Youth Advisory Council will be available early this fall. Please visit https://malinowski.house.gov/services/youth-advisory-council for upcoming information regarding the application process.
